Fun

The Father’s Day weekend went so well. Cam, Mike and I had a beautiful lazy weekend.

It was a gorgeous day on Saturday (the day before) which we spent at Noosa with Mike’s grandad and Mike’s Mum’s family. We shared the most delicious vegetarian pizza. Cameron was such a sweetheart and gave everyone cuddles. We were pleasantly surprised at how nonchalant he was about being passed around and the constant photos.

The drive was long but the sunshine and a well-behaved little munchkin (well, well-behaved for him in the car… there were a few tears) made for a lovely trip.

Sunday was less appealing weather-wise but we had a big sleep in then set off for lunch at Toscani’s and a day of shopping. We came home and snuggled up for a movie while we ate dinner and Cam fell asleep in our arms. It was perfect.

————————

Cameron has taken to liking his tunnel (blue one from ikea) and now crawls through it at random while we spend time in his playroom. We have been doing some montessori-inspired activities with him (cup and ball, paper scrunching and a simplified ring stacking activity) which he enjoys.

Cam also has said his first discernable word! Whilst it’s not yet in context really he said “Dadda” which made us both beam! He hasn’t stopped saying it all day :P He is babbling a lot more lately.

We went to the op shop recently and I got some awesome book ends and a lamp for Cam’s woodland-themed room. It’s almost finished now, I just have to make his reading corner, move his bookcase in there and finish his mobile to hang from the roof. There will be photos!

I’m also going to put Cammy-level bookcases or shelves in each of the rooms he frequents with select toys/books/activities so that he can pick and chose and everything has it’s place (montessori-inspired).

I’ve been finding the most gorgeous things for Cameron when he’s a toddler for imaginative play – particularly natural wooden items on etsy – WANT! I’ve decided on everything for his first birthday (aside from the location which I’m not 100% on yet!) and know what all the kiddies are going to get as favours! So fun!

We went to the park today after Cam’s afternoon nap after swimming. We got some smiles out of strangers as I rolled down the hill while Cam giggled like mad – so adorable!

My Skinny Mini

So it’s no secret that I over-analyse and that I am a worrier… But in the past month I’ve became increasingly worried about Cameron’s weight.

Every single time I’m out and about I get people saying the same thing (aside from “he’s so cute!” and “how old is he?” and “he’s active isn’t he?”) which is undoubtedly “he’s petite/skinny/little isn’t he?”.

It’s usually said in a friendly way, without malice or hurtful intent… and each time I just smile and nod and say something along the lines of “yeah, he’s just built like that”

But part of me sinks a little and I store it away into the mummy-guilt-pocket in my brain where I know I’ll continue to feed the worry that I’m somehow doing something wrong by him.

He’s a decent eater but certainly not a big eater by any means. He gets a good combination of proteins, carbs and good fats and guzzles breastmilk like it’s the nectar of the Gods.

But he also is always on the move crawling, bouncing, standing, climbing, scooting… you get the picture. He has a fast metabolism and burns those calories like it’s his job.

So I casually made a doctors appointment the other day. & today I worked myself up into a frenzy of guilt-induced-fear where I said things like “I’m an awful Mum!” “He’s malnourished!” “I must make skim milk!” “I’m going to start giving him formula!” “I’ve been so ignorant!” as time grew nearer to his appointment.

Let me firstly say that my doctor is awesome. I’m happy to travel the 20 mins and wait to see her instead of going around the corner because she knows me, she gets me and she gets what I need.

She was there when I found out that I had lost Ollie. She was the one holding my hand saying “you can do this”. She was the one who was proactive and helped me as we TTC again. She was the one who quietly rejoiced with me when my bloods came back positive. She was the one who said “is that Rachel? Yeah, put her through” and told me my HCG levels over the phone each time while I was pregnant with Cameron because she knew that I just.couldn’t.wait.

& she saw me at my worst, in those dark days when I was a shell of myself clinging to a piece of paper outlining how I was feeling throughout my anxiety attacks – who helped me and never judged me. She smiles wide every time she sees us and let’s Cameron play with her instruments. She’s awesome.

Anyway, today she saw it in my eyes… that on-the-edge-ness. She went through the usual checks with him and said in her sweet English accent “Okay… so he’s grown heaps in height since his 6 month check up and his head circumference is spot on. You are right, he hasn’t put on much weight… but let’s put this into perspective. You and your husband were skinny babies. He’s obviously very active *says as he’s racing across the room to bang the scales with a tool of hers* but healthy. I’m going to refer you to a paediatrician just to make sure all is well but he’s still well within normal ranges, particularly for an active breastfed baby”

Relief. So he’s only 7.5 kgs (10th percentile in the red book but 15th on breastfed charts) but is 72 cm long. My skinny mini. Considering I was 15 kilograms when I was 5 years old (weighed when I got my massive tonsils and adenoids removed which made it harder for me to eat and breath at the same time) I guess he’s just following in our foot steps?

I think babies grow how they grow and my boy is healthy… But I’ll probably continue to worry… because that’s part of my job as a Mumma.

To My 8 Month Old Baby Boy

Dear Cameron

Two thirds of the way to a year old already. How did that happen?!

I can’t help but marvel at you everyday as you show more and more of the gorgeous person that you are and continue to grow and grow. You blow me away daily with the little things you pick up and how happy you make us. Daddy is always saying how happy you make him and everytime I nod and agree. You are beautiful.

You so desperately want to be a big boy. You’re so tiny and sweet but you open drawers, open cupboards, clean things with wipes, crawl around (mostly commando still lately because you like the tiles) so fast, pull yourself up to stand and bop up and down.

You are still not that keen on food. You’re much more of a boobavarian. You enjoy feeding yourself small amounts of food but smearing it all over yourself and the high chair is much more fun! You have taken to crawling up to me, feeding and crawling away which is so funny.

You love your bath time. You like to stand up and play with the taps and you would rather play with your body wash bottle than the toys we have for you. You hate getting dry and dressed afterwards and try and crawl away the whole time!

You crawled off the mat at swimming for the first time last week! I was so proud of you! You grinned at me in the way that makes my heart smile when I said “You did it!!”. I love it when I can see your pride.

You are starting to like Phoebe and crawl up to the screen door and sit and ‘talk’ to her. You have always loved Little Man and you continue to cuddle him (and hit him over the head with your rattle, poor sweetie!) and smile when you see him. You love when we go for walks with Phoebe – you bend down and watch her the whole time.

You have taken to enjoying turning the pages of board books. You love the “That’s Not My…” book series and will find them on the shelf and pull them down. Your favourite toy is probably your wooden cars closely followed by the wooden shape sorter which you like using as a garage for your trucks and cars. You’re so adorable.

You’re more vocal this month than any other by far. You make a lot of sounds with ‘g’ and ‘b’ and love blowing raspberries saying ‘booooo’.

Your hair is certainly lighter and is a definite blond. It looks like candy floss in the mornings. You have lovely long dark lashes which look so cute when they’re wet.

You are obsessed with waving in the past week. You wave at ‘blinky’ (the sensor alarm in the corner of our room) as well as the tv, strangers and everyone we know. You also do this thing where you put your hand into pincer grip and swing it horizontally back and forth like you’re drawing with a pencil. I call you mini-maestro.

You will randomly hi 5 us now but you’re very selective as to what deserves a hi 5 :P

You are better in the car now and are happy so long as you have your car toys (mobile phone, taggie and grip rattle). Sometimes I have to bribe you with my wallet or a plain bikkie though!

You love phones and remotes. You play with my blackberry. I have an app that locks the screen and each button shows up the corresponding colourful letter of the alphabet on a blue sky screen in kiddy voices which makes you grin all shy.

You have the best posture. It’s so freaking cute! You sit up all tall and make us feel bad. You are all proper and sweet.

You’re just such a happy darling boy! Each morning I’m greeted with a beautiful cheeky grin and your excitedly bounce on your knees. You now follow me around the house (have to keep the floors extra clean!) as I get myself breaky in the morning and you ‘help’ me with my chores.

You get very upset when I leave the room too fast. I tell you what I’m doing – I can’t wait until you understand! You’re a very clingy bubby and in some ways you’re so little. You’re certainly a skinny mini and it doesn’t matter what I do to bulk you up you burn it off!

You laugh when I say “I’mma getcha!” and you’re now very ticklish (especially your ribs and neck!). You giggle a lot at Dadda, particularly when he head bangs at you. You still love being worn as a hat and being a wittle genie. I love all our little inside jokes and nuances. You are so charismatic my boy.

I love how cuddly you are. I love how sometimes only I will do. I love how you crawl desperately towards me and cling onto me. I can feel your love. I love protecting you and how you know that “Mumma’s got you”.

You’ve almost completely grown out of your small baby beehind magic-alls. We have some mediums on order now.

You have taken more of a liking to Dadda (I mean, you’ve always loved him but you’ve always been a strongly devoted Mumma’s boy!) and will sometimes cry when he leaves in the morning for work. It’s the most gorgeous thing!

It blows me away to think that you are only going to get more and more interactive. I am just so very lucky to be able to call you mine. We are so blessed.

I simply love that I have the rest of my life to get to know the little person that you are. I love that I get to spend my days with you – teaching you things and having fun with you. I hope that you grow up feeling secure and happy within yourself and your life.

Cameron, you have the very best of me. You are my sunshine.

Love you always

Your Mumma xxxx

More Arty Stuff

I’m loving unwinding with craft lately. Hence the never-ending projects and my glee skipping through op shops and Spotlight.

There is something peaceful and nurturing about creating something. I love the mindlessness that comes with painting a blank canvas or the repetitive motions of craft.

I’ve decided to start making more decor for our home. I always put tonnes of thought into Cameron’s room and playroom but the rest of our house gets ignored. Well that’s no more!

I’ve decided to keep a similar theme to Cam’s (woodland) theme with regards to colour. The main colours will be robin’s egg blue (tiffany blue), olive green and chocolate brown. I already have a fair few things that match this theme as well as a lot of bird/nest/tree/leaves items that will fit in.

Tonight I made these:

The canvases were $1 each… cheap art! I made them all using acrylics.

I prepped the canvases with gesso, dried each layer with a hair dryer in between to speed things up. Then I painted the each of them a base colour of a blue I mixed to look like robin’s egg blue each with a different highlight colour (yellow, turquoise, brown, darker blue).

When that layer was dry I did a wash over with watered down robin’s egg blue and wiped it off with paper towel so that the highlight colour stood out. Then I flicked white onto the darker canvases, drew in some simple bird and birdcages silhouettes on the lighter two and flicked black onto them. Voila!
I also repainted a cheap frame to look shabby chic and framed some sheet music scrapbook paper and made a “Cameron’s Room” banner.
Current projects:
An mobile to hang from Cam’s roof in his nursery (using the felt owl and toadstool – I need to make another one of each)
Fingerpainted canvas by Cameron in his room colours using big square $4 canvas I scored
Party stuff (I have a fair bit of time for this :P )

Next weekend I’ll be able to show you the father’s day craft Cam and I did for Mike but for now it’s hush hush!

Also, I’ve made Cam’s first photo book (8″ by 8″ contemporary black background) that I’ll be able to pick up next weekend. It is all my fave photos of Cammy from birth to his 6 month party. Big W had them on sale for $9.90 and I can collect it for free from our local store. Nice!

Life is really easy right now. Our home is functional. We are all healthy mentally and physically. We are financially stable.

That aside, life isn’t just easy – it’s great. I almost feel like something has to go wrong soon to balance it all out.

Mike and I have always wanted 3 or 4 children. Pre-Cameron we were pretty set on 4 but now we are leaning more towards 3.

Pre-Cameron we were also thinking that we would have our children very close together (under 2 years apart).. But lately I, in particular, have been reluctant of this idea.

There are several reasons for this:

1) Fear of experiencing more depression and/or anxiety attacks (this factor would be present no matter what timing)
2) I am so enjoying Cameron and want this stage to last
3) Having one baby is my norm. I know what I’m doing. It’s nice.
4) I’m thinking that having Cameron at a stage of more independence and understanding will be beneficial.

The truth is, is that there are positives and negatives of any age gap but seeing this all typed out makes me more aware of OUR situation.

You may be wondering why on earth I’m worrying about this when my son isn’t even 8 months old. Well, initially October was going to be our first month of TTC.. & although my body is already helping with the decision (I don’t have my cycles back) it’s made us think. Now we’re thinking May next year – bit of a jump but it’s because we don’t want another December bubby.

Thoughts??

Sewing Attempts & Cuteness

So I’ve been getting obsessed with finding woodlands themed items for Cameron’s big-boy room (when he turns one) and his birthday (blue, green and brown – trees, owls, birds, nests, eggs, squirrels, acorns, toadstools, etc)

I’ve been mainly looking on etsy but found this cute tutorial for making hand-sewn felt owls… so I gave it a go (disclaimer: I’ve never hand-sewn… I’m in no way crafty… this thing took me nearly 3 hours from deciding to make it to taking this photo.. so be nice LOL)

Clearly he needs pupils… and a name. I’m working on it. At first I told Mike that I was going to make an orange and a green one as well but I gave up on that idea after dropping the needle for the third time and stabbing myself.

**********************************************

Anyway, moving on to even cuter things than that owl… My baby boy is developing a sense of humour and we have so much fun throughout the day lately.

Mike had the day off today (Friday) and we went out for breakfast and lunch. Cam loves sitting in the high chair and ‘talking’ with us.

Driving with Cam is so peaceful now and it’s partly due to his taggie. I bought him a gorgeous rainbow taggie from Little Tortoise at madeit.com.au (and on ebay). Now we often look in our rearview mirror and see this:

We got the rainbow taggie blanket (for Cam’s rainbow half birthday). They’re so great because they come with a free matching snap-clip so you can’t lose it & they’re only $10 including free postage!

My etsy “favourites” is ridiculously full as I’ve decided I need to start getting things for Cam’s room and party now (even though it’s not needed for 4 months) and that I want to add some themed homewares to our place.

Thank you to everyone who has voted for us. You can vote daily and it means a lot to me :)

Fun Baby Activities!!

Now that Cameron has started getting more mobile, inquisitive and communicates with me a bit more I’ve started looking for more activities to do with him. We read, sing, stack toys, water play, blow bubbles, play outside, etc but I like the idea of giving him more experiences and getting a bit more creative.

I’ve left my camera at a friends place (DOH!) so I’ve been taking photos with an old camera of ours that we have lost the cables to (so I can’t upload them) but hopefully I’ll be able to get them on the computer at some point! Anyway, here’s some of the ideas that we have tried successfully or want to try :) Ideas are mine unless there is a link to elsewhere.

“Money Box” Fun – use an empty formula tin or similar; decorate if you like, and cut a decent-sized slot in the lid. Use poker chips or something of similar size (non-chokables) to use as ‘money’. Show your bub how to pick up the chips and put them in the slot. It’s fun to see them shake it about and get them all back out afterwards (open the lid for them). The Activity Mom did a post on a similar thing :) – photo from her blog <3

Cam’s masterpiece for his Grandma

Painting – baby rice cereal with food colouring (make sure you spray with an art sealant after is has dried to ensure it doesn’t go yucky). It’s lovely to pick colours that match their nursery or playroom and let them ‘paint’ a canvas that you can showcase. Another idea is to let your bubby paint with non-toxic paint on canvas paper which you can cut into shapes (i.e. animals, vehicles) and frame.

Caution: May over-stimulate baby :P

Playdough – there are plenty of easy no-cook playdough recipes out there. If you are concerned about your baby eating the playdough put it in a ziplock bag and let them squish it and manipulate it through the bag.

Sticker Activity – you can use tape like over at Fun With Mama but we use stickers. This activity is great for body awareness and makes for cute photos with silly faces, serious concentration and crossed-eyes. Basically you put stickers on different body parts (nose, hands, feet, etc), name them and watch as your bub tries to pull the sticker off.

Sticky Fun - use duct tape, assorted objects and a sheet of contact paper about 2 feet long. Lay the contact paper out on the floor sticky-side up and tape it down around the edges with duct tape. Place the objects on it and lift them off together. Gently place your baby’s palm down on the sticky surface. Repeat with bare feet. If your baby can eat pieces of dry cereal, add a few pieces to the sticky side. You can also tape the paper sticky-side out on the wall. Found on Family Education website.

Water Play – use a plastic tub with a few inches of water and add some waterplay equipment such as empty squeeze bottles, plastic cups, boats, funnels, balls, floating objects, plant sprayer, sponge or dish rag, etc. Babies love water, and you won’t need to give them directions except to set out the water and get playful. Add anything that seems interesting. Remember to never leave your baby unattended, even for a few moments. You can add a few drops of scented extract, such as lemon or peppermint. Or add a few drops of food coloring. Also on Family Education site.

Super Goop - make the goop by boiling 2 cups water, adding 1/2 a cup of cornstarch until smooth. Add food coloring and stir – adjust the amount of food coloring until you get the color you want. Remove from heat and cool. Let your child squish away on the tabletop, or, for less mess (or younger children), pour the mixture into two Ziploc bags and seal. Also on Family Education site.

Water Bag – Fill a ziplock bag with water and various small items (buttons, paper clips, pegs, stickers), squish out all the air, zip and tape it up and watch as your little one plays with it. Just watch it if they’re teething though… Cam bit through one the other day! LOL! Found this over at The Activity Mom

I’ll try and think of/find some more and might make this a regular thing :)

What do you and your bub do?
